decorating

Thought I’d share a few thoughts on decorating on a low to no budget in a rental apartment (read: can’t put big holes in the walls or paint anything). With these thoughts in mind I’ve had to be creative, but have come up with a few solutions that work. Our apartment has almost no nails by which to hang artwork and we were pretty much explicitly told not to put a lot of holes in the walls. So I’ve opted to use fabric to decorate; since its lightweight it can be held by some flat headed push pins, the holes created by these are really small and unnoticeable. The thing that is tricky is getting the fabric taut enough to not sag so adjusts will probably need to be made a couple times. I had this lovely piece of antique fabric that I’d bought ages ago on fabric row in Philadelphia. It’s such a beautiful piece that I can never bring myself to cut it, so this was a good use for it. To get the gather in the top piece I just did a large basting stitch by hand and then pulled the ends together to cinch it up and knotted it behind the fabric. This is what hangs above our bed. On the adjoining wall I used straight pins (again, minimal damage to the wall) to hang 6 of these fun little napkins of ships I found at an antiques store that i LOVE in Austin, TX.

As long as you're decorating on a budget, fancy coming back to Austin and decorating our place? :)

I love what you've done with these pieces of fabric. Your creativity astounds me, Laura. Would love to see some more pics of the apartment, maybe step back a bit so I can see the whole room/wall from a bit of a distance?

The 'navigate' napkin is too perfect.
