Hable con Ella

while watching an animal suffer is not my particular cup of tea, i was really moved by the Spanish film i saw recently, Hable Con Ella (Talk to Her). (although according to our Spanish friend T, Almadovar is only appreciated by the west because the French love him...) anyway, i found the scene where Lydia is dressing for the bull fight particularly visually stunning, not altogether surprising i'm sure. the level of workmanship that goes into a custom garment like this, so rich with cultural symbolism and tradition is really amazing to me. also, i think Rosario Flores was cast perfectly for this part, she has such an incredibly different kind of beauty than your typical star; it's refreshing. In some ways I wished the movie could have been the story of Lydia's life. Without revealing much about this film, I would recommend it for its thought-provoking nature and imagery that stays with you.
