time is on my side

Ran into theses random watch parts that I picked up at that same store in Austin I mentioned in a previous post. I originally bought them for color and motif inspiration for prints, fabrics, etc. But when I ran into them again I was struck by their potential as jewelry. I set out with the intention of making a ring, but I ended up making a necklace instead. I had tried various ways of adding swarovski crystal beads I have left from my garment collection by threading them through the holes, but the stones were just a bit large and didn’t look right to me, so I decided to keep it simple; someday when I have some money perhaps I will buy some teeny stones to set into the surface; I think it would look spectacular. While I liked it as a ring one of the edges has a little lip that would make for uncomfortable wearing for any length of time. After a good hour or so toying around with that idea I ended up with what you see, a simple necklace design that I know I would wear. Sometimes editing away is the best method.

On another tack, these watch parts were making me think of Cat Power in the Speaking for Trees dvd; basically it’s a couple hours of her jamming out in a field, singing whatever seems to pop into her head. I’ve always loved it, and found it particularly conducive to my creative process. There’s a part where she’s singing it, covering the song made famous by the Rolling Stones in her own memorable and moving way…; “….time is on my side….” And it stays with me and pops into my head often, and it’s a very good thought to have.

I love this!!!! I remember that book you had in college and I was looking at all of those watches and old car dials around the same time...
