Not Creative?

Often when I tell people that I am an artist or designer, they will say "wow!....i'm so not creative". This always baffles me for two reasons: first, I believe that everyone is creative; it takes creativity to live, period. Second, I believe that creativity in an artistic sense, while it can come naturally to some, is a skill which can be learned through practice. I've had many great teachers in my life. Instead of telling a life story however, I'm going to encourage a little creative break for anyone who might be reading.
Put on headphones if you are in a public place.
Open Musicovery.
On the left toolbar, select a genre of music you like; I chose jazz.
Just above that choose a mood, I clicked somewhere in between Calm and Positive.
In a new window or tab, open JacksonPollock.org.
start moving your mouse around, note the different way the paint "falls" depending how fast or slow you move your hand. Click the mouse button to change the color. Now just roll with it and create your own temporary masterpiece. Hit the space bar if you want to erase.
Change your music and see if it affects the way you use the paint.
A little meditative creativity has just been put out into the word by you. Smile.

I once had an artist tell me that one thing he loved was relinquishing some control in his work to an outside force, in the way that Pollock let gravity be a tool in his work, or weather and pollution in DuChamp's work.... I think this idea reaches still farther than art to finding ways to create a sense of peace or beauty with in a world of many uncompromising forces....
