Reflections on Risk (and Rewards)

  1. A risk is something you have to own yourself; you take on the responsibility for the outcome.
  2. You'll probably find that most people around you will be quick to point out the dangers of risk. That can be helpful sometimes.
  3. Sometimes that can stop you from doing something foolish.
  4. Sometimes that's what you need to hear to plant the seeds of caution in your approach to risk.
  5. Sometimes that's just a gate you've got to climb over to get to the good stuff.
  6. Each person has a different idea of what risk means to them; allow people to live within their own comfort zone if that is what is working for them.
  7. Never intentionally push another person into a risky position. They will probably end up resenting you for it and the merits will be lost to them.
  8. When thoughtfully approached, risk can present you with some pretty spectacular rewards.
  9. Risk can reveal to you the places of your dreams.
  10. Risk can renew your conviction and hope.
  11. Risk can make you feel invigorated.
  12. Risk can uncover unimagined territories.
  13. Risk can remind you where you are going and who you are.
  14. Risk when thoughtfully and consciously taken together can bring people closer and result in the greatest of endeavors.
  15. Even risk that doesn't contain the rewards you imagined, holds the gems of wisdom and experience to encourage you in future risk taking.

Wow! True and inspiring. The happiest people are those who are willing to take risks. Even though I know this to be true, it's still hard. Thanks for this reminder!

My pleasure; and I know what you mean, I wrote it as a reminder to myself too!

Thank you for sharing these reflections, Laura. It really resonates, on so many levels, and speaks to so many different kinds of risks (in my case, for example, I'm thinking of the choice to be a parent, have more children, etc...). I love you.

and perhaps you remember the one about when skiing, if you're not falling down once in a while, then you are probably not having as much fun as you might

nice stuff you wrote :-)

This is really great to read. I am taking some pretty big risks right now and this reaffirms why I decided to take that leap :)
