Little Black Dress Competition

Today I got a little time off from the niece and nephew watching to work on a Little Black Dress, which I'll be submitting to a competition here in Austin. I just happened to be passing this store, Blackmail, on South Congress and saw the flier in the window for the contest. When I saw the dates for the project fitted perfectly with my time here, I knew it was meant to be! Not to mention that not one hour prior I had stumbled across a lovely ball of fine black cotton cording at the thrift shop for 50 cents! I used that to make the crochet work for the collar of the dress. After stopping by a few wonderful fabric stores (namely Silk Road and The Common Thread, both with wonderful selection and service!) I settled on a nice silk/cotton with a subtle sheen on the silk side. (I bought my notions at a place called The Fabric Shop on Oltorf which had great prices and wonderful service, if a rather humble selection of fabrics.) The fabric I chose has a wonderful drape but still some body to it; wonderful to work with, and sewing it today was a breeze. Still lots more detail work to do, but the dress is taking shape, and I'm very much enjoying the process. Look forward to showing you the finished project!

I really like the crochet, I learnt to do 'Irish' crochet as a child, but have forgotten, Looking forward to seeing the dress.
thanks Madeline! i love "irish" crochet (with all the stunning raised work and flowers). I'm hoping to teach myself to do it in the future.
I forgot to tell the story of how i decided on a pattern for the crochet work collar. In the same thrift shop where I purchased the cording, I saw a small old cream color doily for sale, with a lovely pattern in the outside ring. I bought it and looked at it very closely to learn how it was made. Once I figured it out, I adapted that into the collar you see. :)
it's looking fabulous!
